History at The Marquis of Lorne Inn

"The Maiden All for Lorne" - Princess Louise (1848-1939)

In 1878 Lorne was appointed Governor General of Canada and the couple lived there for a short period. In 1900 they became Duke and Duchess of Argyll. In 1914 Louise was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

Louise died in 1939, and, unusually for members of the Royal Family, was cremated at Golders Green and her ashes interred in the Royal cemetery at Frogmore. Luise married John Douglas Sutherland Campbell (1845-1914), Marquis of Lorne, later 9th Duke of Argyll, in 1871
