"The Maiden All for Lorne" - Princess Louise (1848-1939)
Born in the year of European revolutions Louise was the wittiest, best-dressed, and most attractive of Victoria's daughters. She could be moody and spiteful but was an extremely talented artist and sculptress attending the National Art Training School.
She was the first child of a reigning sovereign to become engaged to a commoner since 1515, marrying John Douglas Sutherland Campbell (1845-1914), Marquis of Lorne, later 9th Duke of Argyll, in 1871. Their married life was overshadowed by their inability to have children and by financial difficulties.
Louise maintained her interest in the arts, moving in social circles much wider than any of her siblings. She was also patron of the Kensington Dispensary and Children's Hospital, the forerunner of the Princess Louise Hospital for Children.
